Department of Russian


    The Russian Department of Wuhan University was established in 1950. In 1980, it was ratified as one of the first batch of master degree programs in Russian language and literature in China. In 2009, a post-doctoral mobile station was founded. In 2011, it was granted the right to confer doctoral degrees.

    There are 11 teachers in the Russian Department, including 5 with senior professional titles and 1 foreign teacher every year. The Department enrolls about 20 undergraduates, 5-6 masters and 1-3 doctoral students every year. The training orientations include Russian linguistics, Russian literature and translation theories, forming a “bachelor-master-doctor-post-doctoral” talent training system.

    The Department is committed to serving national strategies and cultivating international, inter-disciplinary and top-notch talents. Relying on the advantages of Wuhan University’s complete disciplines and strong teaching capabilities, the Department has cultivated outstanding Russian talents with solid basic skills and innovative spirit, which contributes to the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative. Students have won many awards in national Russian competitions. Graduates have good employment prospects, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Public Security, Hubei Foreign Affairs Office, Bank of China, PetroChina, Huawei, ZTE, etc. The alumni of our department work in China, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan etc., and have been well received by employers.

    The Department is striving to deepen international cooperation and further academic exchanges. It has established long-term joint training programs with Lomonosov Moscow State University, St. Petersburg University etc. to cultivate students’ international vision and develop cross-cultural communication skills. At the same time, it has carried out in-depth academic cooperation with Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian universities and research institutes.

    The Department attaches importance to teacher training and strengthens scientific research teams. The research fields,  systematic and professional,  focus on cultivating academic research teams based on literary theory, sinology and translation studies. The research results are fruitful and innovative. It has obtained 3 National Social Science Fund projects and 5 provincial humanities and social science projects. In recent years, it has published 4 monographs, more than 10 textbooks, 10 translations and nearly 100 papers. Among them, Professor Hu Guming’s A textbook of Russian-Chinese Translation won the first prize of the second “National Excellent Teaching Material Award for Russian Majors in Colleges and Universities” by the Ministry of Education.
